Tuesday, April 25, 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Mr. Bertrand Gruss, Economist, Research Department, International Monetary Fund
Mr. Weicheng Lian, Economist, Research Department, International Monetary Fund
The event will take place at the Joint Vienna Institute, room 600 C, 6th floor, Mariahilfer Straße 97, 1060 Vienna.
The presentation will give an overview of global prospects and policies discussed in the April 2017 World Economic Outlook and will cover in detail its two analytical chapters. Chapter 2 (“Roads Less Traveled: Growth in Emerging Market and Developing Economies in a Complicated External Environment”) examines how external conditions affect medium-term growth in emerging market and developing economies and the pace at which their income levels converge toward those in advanced economies; and identifies policies that may help these economies extract the most out of a possibly weaker growth impulse from the external environment going forward. Chapter 3 (“Understanding the Downward Trend in Labor Income Shares”) documents the downward trend in the global labor share of income since the early 1990s, as well as its heterogeneity along many dimensions, and explores how the forces of technology and trade have tended to lower labor’s share of national income in many countries.
