TARGET GROUP: Public officials who serve as principal authors, major contributors, or editors of country documents in English.
DESCRIPTION: This workshop helps government professionals write and edit more effectively as they create or revise products such as reports, strategies, memos, and PowerPoints, as well as external communications for the media and general public. Topics include the principles of clarity, structuring of sentences and paragraphs, revising for concision and stylistic consistency, highlighting of main messages, and techniques for making text friendlier to online search and mobile devices. Interactive exercises will focus on examples from participants' own work; successful applicants will be required to provide a minimum of five pages of their writing and editing in English in advance.
The instructor, Paul McClure has 16 years' experience at the World Bank Group in units responsible for print publishing, online communications, and media relations. He is a previous editor of the International Finance Corporation's annual report and created the reference work A Guide to the World Bank. The course is based on more than 15 writing workshops he has provided to government and international organization participants. He is a graduate of Yale University and holds a Ph.D. in English from Cornell University.
